In Response To: [Civil War] BENNET BURLEIGH (A.CHALMERS)

You'll find several refs to him in "Come Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of Lincoln," by Tidwell, Hall and Gaddy (Univ Press of Mississippi, 1988). He was at one stage second-in-command to John Yates Beall, Confederate naval "commando," in "Philo Parsons" incident. Multiple refs in Kinchen, "Confederate Operations in Canada and the North (1970) and in Horan, "Confederate Agent"(1954), where the name is spelled "Burley." Beyond this, subject matter is "Confederate Eyes Only," but if refs are not readily available, or you have specific questions, please contact me directly by e-mail and I'll try to help.
