Bob,

You mentioned in your post that the Massachusetts Line was numbered in 1777. Please provide reference for this information as I know of no official designation until 1779, though many Massachusetts Regiments during the 77-79 period either listed themselves as a numbered Massachusetts battalion or by the Col's name ie, Bailey's Regimental papers during this period were labeled "1st Massachusetts Battalion" while Vose's carried Vose's used his name.

These 2 commanders debated seniority and in 1779, Vose's becmae the 1st and Bailey's the 2nd.

This numbering issue has long concerned my because many historians have attributed the 79 designation to the service of Mass battalions from 77 on.
