It may be intersing to some that the US Army announced in in Feb 1965 that it planned to replace the rank of Private First Class with the rank of Lance Corporal. It was a part of sweeping changes to the enlisted rank structure that was in response to confusion after the 1958 Military Pay Bill that added two senior grades and allowed for enlisted soldiers of different grades to wear the same insignia.
Though planned to begin in Sep 65, in August the Army stopped plans. It was not until 1968 that the changes finally made its way in to the system, but the Lance Corporal did not make the cut.
