[WW I] Troop Trains

Does anyone have any extensive informamtion of WWI French units, rank structure, and condition of troops trains going to and from the front? I am writing a story about a Frenchmen returning to the front after going home on a medical furlough like the one Paul Baumer takes home in ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. Are the trains like trains today, booths where you could get alchohol, or were they just box cars filled with troops?? I'm renting ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT tonight so maybe it will answer some of my questions. Even though it is Germany it should be similar. What materials would you suggest I research to make my story historically accurate?? Thank you.
