[Gen'l Info] "Lance" Rank for NCOs

In the 19thC the term "Lance" appears to have been a temporary rank "boost"--a sort of "poor man's brevet"--which, I presume, meant no additional pay, but could give, e.g., a private the status of an acting NCO. How, when and why did the USMC pick up this rather obscure term and incorporate it into their present day rank structure?
