[Gen'l Info] Cavalry

I am looking for information on tactical cavalry formations. Specifically, what formations were used by cavalry at the company, platoon and squad level when assaulting massed infantry (assuming modern age - i.e. percussion weapons).
I am also curious as to how much ground cavalry scouts could cover in a day, how many hours a day a scout could ride his horse before resting himself and the mount and what the average daily number of miles were that could be travelled by a scout at maximum endurance. This is assuming that the scout does not have access to fresh horses.
Thank you for you time and knowledge,
John Grey
