[Gen'l Info] When did George Washington become famous?

I know he became well known among Virginians when he got a little overzealous during the French and Indian War. But just how well known was he to the general public in the other colonies. My actual question is rather specific in nature:

How well known would he be to the average Pennsylvania German farmer of York, Pennsylvania in the year 1762?

Why? Because in the year 1762 my ancestor Johann Simon Clar named his son George Washington Clar. Now "George" or the german "Georg" would be common enough, but "Washington" is decidedly English. Was "GW" famous enough in 1762 for people to start naming their children after him? or is there another explanation??? was there a personal connection??

Please feel free to send out any theory!
