[AmRevolution] Recruiting the VA Line

Hello,
Does anyone have any information or knowledge of recruiting/training patterns for the VA line c. 1777-78?
I'm trying to fill in the service gaps for a soldier who enlisted in 2/1777 in the 7th VA, but does not appear on a muster until 2/1778.
I'm confident he did enlist in 1777. I just can't figure the legitimate reason he would not appear on the muster rolls of the regiment in the North.
Any help or leads appreciated.
