There is no such unit at the 18th Volunteers in any of the 13 original states that contributed forces to the American Revolution. Maryland was simply too small to have had such a high number. It could raise only 7 Continental Regiments. The Maryland Militia was organized by county and within the county individual local companies were named according to the town or district, but had no numerical designation. A good reference is "Muster Rolls and other records of service of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution 1775-1783 published by Authority of the State, under the direction of the Maryland Historical Society". Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., of Baltimore republished this volume in 1972, and it may be still in print. The index contains only 4 references to George Dyer.
