Three chevrons and open star point up in crimson was Ordnance Sgt of regular Army 1851-1872, when it changed to point down until 1901 when the star was replaced by a flaming bomb. Now, according to Dr. Michael McAfee, Curator Museum West Point, in the CW era state militia units often employed same star over chevrons in unit colors to represent the Color Sgt, or, with two chevrons, the Color Cpl. Also crossed U.S. flags over chevrons could represent the Color Sgt.
In 1883 U.S. regular Army finally adopted an official chevron for color Sgt, an open circle over three chevrons for battalion and regimental Color Sgt, but was changed in 1901 to open star over chevrons likewise in branch colors.
