In Response To: [Uniforms] chevrons (Ted)

Dear Ted,

It sounds like you are referring to the chevrons of a color sergeant.

In 1872, ordnance sergeants wore three stripes and a star, points down.

In 1902, chevrons were reversed (points up) and three stripes and a star signified a color sergeant.

As late as 1916, ordnance sergeants wore a flaming bomb on their chevrons.

I can send you images of all these.

No reference was found to two stripes and a star.

An orderly was a soldier assigned to attend to the needs of a superior, generally an officer.

Can you describe the chevrons as to size, material and color?

James B. Ronan II
