Dear Ted,
It sounds like you are referring to the chevrons of a color sergeant.
In 1872, ordnance sergeants wore three stripes and a star, points down.
In 1902, chevrons were reversed (points up) and three stripes and a star signified a color sergeant.
As late as 1916, ordnance sergeants wore a flaming bomb on their chevrons.
I can send you images of all these.
No reference was found to two stripes and a star.
An orderly was a soldier assigned to attend to the needs of a superior, generally an officer.
Can you describe the chevrons as to size, material and color?
