Sounds like you have the right idea-- a polite letter with your facts backed by your sources. It would help the author if you provided copies of your sources, allowing him to see the errors of his ways, which he might not do if he had to look up the source himself.

Most publishers will forward mail to their authors. If they won't give out his address, then ask if they will forward mail to him.
