I don't know if U.S. submarines operated off the mouth of the Amazon, but I do know German submarines did. Information on this theatre of operations can be found in Volume X of Samuel Eliot Morison's "History of the United States Naval Operations in World War II, The Atlantic Battle Won, May 1943 - May 1945" (ISBN 0-7858-1311-X).

This book is available from The Scholar's Bookshelf and probably from Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble as well.
