Generally, soldiers (enlisted and officers) moved to the front in the famous "40 & 8" boxcars (40 men or 8 horses).

Travel on leave (permission, in French)was done in whatever type railcar was available.

4. Lafond, Georges: "Covered With Mud and Glory", Small, Maynard, & Co., 1918

Books 3 and 4 are generally available at used book stores.
