[WW I] Wilmer face shields

Can anyone provide definitive proof that the U.S. M1917 helmet with the Wilmer chain mail eye protection was ever worn by either the U.S. Tank Corps or the AEF Tank Corps during World War I. I know the British pattern leather and chain mail face mask was extensively used by U.S. tankers and was quite popular, however I have never found any emperical evidence proving the Wilmer systen was used by U.S. tankers although it is commonly referred to as being for tank crews.
