In Response To: [AmRevolution] Capt. Lasher's NY Grenadiers (Bob Wintermeier)

The New York City Grenadiers were an Independent company predating the Revolution. They were clothed and equiped by the commanders and not subject to the militia law. Basically they were a marching and chowder society along the lines of the volunteer companies during the Federal period of the U.S.

The Grenadiers were with the radicals infavor of independence and were active with the Sons of Liberty etc. A number of there men were recommended and/or served as officers in the NY Line of 1775.

When NYC was due to be attacked the company was formed, along with most of the other companies into a battalion. Lasher commanded this battalion (as a colonel) and I believe Capt. Abraham Brasher commanded the Grenadiers (would need to verify my notes). The rest of the NYC independent companies were in a second battalion commanded by William Malcolm.

The Grenadiers supposedly were on the defensive line in NYC during the various engagements in 1776 and there grenades were used for defensive purposes... can not prove that...

Lasher's 1st Battalion folded after the NYC Campaign, but Malcolms contined on a coulple more years, reinforced with some Pennsylvanians, as an "Additional" Continental Regiment. They were comanded in the field by Lt.Col. Arron Burr.
