Thanks everyone for answering a question which arose while researching 12/18/05. Looking through the deaths in the U.S. 4th Cavalry regiment for the years 1866-1872, I spotted "Lce." Sergeant John Wildey who died September 17, 1866 from cholera (the cholera epidemics of 1866 and 1867 were terrible for the U. S. Army). Since in over 2700 extractions of Army dead that was the first instance of the "Lance" rank, I was a bit confused until I found this thread. The enlistment record of Wildey shows his rank at death to be "corporal." If I understood the thread correctly, that means he was a Corporal whom the powers that be had hopes of him becoming a Sergeant. Correct?
