The possibility exists that your ancestor may have served in the Ohio National Guard. This was essentially "home guard" but in 1864 the Ohio NG were called up for 100 days service. Some of these units saw real field service, and many would have been properly armed.
Immediately to mind are the 7th and 10th ONG Regiments, both from the Queen City area. The 10th was almost entirely German in composition if my memory is serving me.
