For the Revolution there is a very good section on how the Contiental Army was structured in Wright's The Continental Army. Weigley's History of the United States Army is another good reference. It covers to the 1960's.

The Army had a section at Fort Leavenworth Kansas whose job it was to review things and write up lessons learned. Poke around the Fort Leavenworth website. There ought be an address or email you can contact.
