Language is a communication tool. French is my mother language and I always communicate in French in my home, my city, etc., because nearly everyone else knows it too. But I was also schooled away from my country in American English and UK English also and thus communicate in those when I wish to be understood by Anglophones. I can read Spanish and Portuguese fairly well, but would not even try to speak or write these, being totally incompetent in that respect.
So obviously, this Forum being Anglophone, I like to use English since this is about communication. The majority of people in North America do not have the opportunity, like myself, to use another language in their daily lives, not only in their families, but in the society in which they live and work in.
On the other hand, if I wish to share an archive document on the Forum that would be in French or Spanish, I would have no qualms at all. A researcher interested would have a cursory enough notion of the language. But for an exchange in French, that would be more as a one to one exchange.
I don't think there should be "rules" however; that would a rather aggressive or regressive tone to what has, so far, been a most cordial and very rich source of all manners of information. John and his Spanish cannon documents for instance.
