The Chesapeake Chapter met at the Marine Corps Museum, Quantico, VA on Saturday 21 January 2012. Unfortunately new-fallen snow and ice prevented many of those living north and west of DC from attending. However the ten members and two guests who did show up got a great tour from a very knowledgeable docent, a retired Marine master sergeant, shown in the middle foreground with blue shirt and white trousers.
The museum is, I think, very well done, extensive, entertaining, and of course educational. The members all enjoyed the tour, and many want to return to take in the many exhibits they could only view from a distance in order to keep up with the docent. Free docent tours are available for groups of fewer than 20 daily at 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00. I think we all got much more out of our visit because of the docent's detailed narration in selected portions of the museum.
Here's one quote from our docent: "At about the 10th or 11th week of recruit training, the recruit reaches into his chest and pulls out his slimy red heart, puts it aside, and puts in a nice green Marine heart."
I made 5 short videos of our tour and will post links to them in a response below.
After the tour, we ate lunch in the museum cafeteria on the 2nd deck and conducted the Chapter business meeting. We then adjourned to a member's home and looked at his collection of War of 1812 artifacts.
To see what's in the Marine Corps museum, click on the link below to the "map" part of their website. Click on any area of interest to go to "gallery" page for that area. Then you can page through the photos for that theme.
